Useful Tips on How Not to Break the Winch Using It for the 1st Time

Despite the simplicity of the winch design, not everyone can handle it. Especially the difficulties arise during the initial operation. In order not to break the winch, you need to know the principle of its operation. Have you just bought the winch but you are afraid to use it not to break? Find the basic rules of use on how to properly pull the car, so that the winch does not break.

Things You Should Know about the Winch Functioning

load cable at an angle on winching
With all your desire and efforts, the winch will not pull straight. Only the laws of physics operate here. In order to achieve the desired direction, it must be loaded at an angle. In addition, always pull the cable every 2 meters and rewind closer to the opposite side of the drum. Otherwise, it will be collected, then inevitably jamming and snacking. The less the rope remains on the drum, the more efficient the winch works. At the same time, you should not allow less than five turns to remain on the drum. This can lead to the cable breakage.

Also, do not forget about the car. Continuous operation of the motor at full power is the main reason for the failure of the engine and a decrease in the battery charge. Careful efforts as soon as possible to pull out the car can lead to expensive repairs in the future. After all, the car generator produces only 120 amperes, and the winch can take up to 400 amperes and above. In order not to break the winch and protect the car, a ten-minute break is recommended after every five minutes of operation. In addition, do not often click the remote control. Solenoids can break down, and then you will have to repair the device.

Accessories for Safe and Effective Winch Operation

If you are going to use your winch to the maximum, then don’t save on the following accessories:

Corrosion-proof sling and Blocks

Corrosion protection sling serves as a protective element. It prevents spoilage of trees and steel rope. The block is used to change the direction and increase the thrust. Its installation is mandatory, if the arrow on the voltmeter drops below 10 V. This is an obvious indicator that the mechanism is working at full strength, which can lead to the fact that it just burns out. In order not to break the winch, follow the indicators of the corresponding device.

Jams are accessories which allow splicing of blocks and cables for their further fixing on towing promotions. They are available in different configurations, but the most effective is the omega-shaped model.

Cable Extenders

Sometimes, the car gets stuck in the most unusual places and then extenders will help, which allow you to reach the desired tree.

Do all work in gloves. They prevent damage to the skin on the palms and tighten the arms in the reducer. The use of gloves is the basic safety rule when working with a winch! When starting to unwind the cable, grasp the hook from the outside. Do not put your fingers between the cable and the bumper, because in case of an error with the selection of the button on the remote (or electrical malfunctions), you have every chance of damaging your fingers. Observe this rule always, even if you are going to unwind the cable manually.

Three Simple Rules

In conclusion, it is possible to outline 3 simple rules in order not to have the negative experience with the winch damage:

Rule 1

Do not save money on winch accessories! For effective use of the winch, there are special accessories for winches, such as a shroud, gloves, shackles, blocks and cable extenders.

Rule 2

Think over the ways on how to evacuate. Secondly, before you get stuck, think over the possible variants on how to evacuate taking into account the way you have installed the winch. If your vehicle is equipped with a winch installed in the front, then it will be problematic to drive back.

Rule 3

Check if you understand the basics of the generator operation. Thirdly, it is useful to recall some school knowledge of the physics course: the car generator cannot feed the winch motor, and then it turns electricity not only into work, but also in heat.

  1. In the first puddle, I got stuck and had to unwind the winch. At first, the unwinding went well, but then it simply stopped. I yanked the cable and it flew out of the bumper with its ends – the bolt cut off. We tried to screw it into place, as it was, but standing knee-deep in the mud and concealed installation of the winch in a regular bumper, it’s not so easy to do. As a result, I decided to skip the cable from the back and it turned out that the winding unwinding of the cable now works in reverse sequence. This was the cause of the breakdown. Then I just did not know what to do and that’s why didn’t know how to rewind the cable back. Thanks for the useful information! It will be of use to me next time!

  2. I can say that if winching to the tree, be sure to use a shroud, otherwise you will damage the bark of the tree (if you do not care about the nature – the synthetic rope will be damaged as well. Position the shroud strap as close as possible to the roots. If the car rested on the terrain, you can place a shroud above the ground to stretch a little upwards, but it’s not worth it – it’s so easy to break a tree. If there is not enough literally a meter of cable, you can put on a shroud in the manner of a hammer, but in this way you will reduce the load of the gap 2 times.

  3. I have had such an experience and now want to share the knowledge I have gained. Before proceeding with the winching, check that the hook is securely attached and that the shroud is correctly positioned relative to the load axis. To do this, pull the cable in the direction of the winch and adjust the rigging, if necessary. If you use a shackle to connect the shroud strap to the hook, position it so that the round part is on the side of the eyes. Otherwise, under the influence of the load, the eyes will tighten in the narrow part of the shell and their extraction from there will require effort.
